Professor Zethu Matebeni

PROF. ZETHU MATEBENI

Sexualities, Genders and Queer Studies

Prof. Zethu Matebeni is a sociologist, activist, writer, documentary film maker, Professor and South Africa Research Chair in Sexualities, Genders and Queer Studies at the University of Fort Hare. She has held positions at the University of the Western Cape and has been senior researcher at the Institute for Humanities in Africa (HUMA) at UCT. She has been a visiting Professor Yale University and has received a number of research fellowships including those from African Humanities Program, Ford Foundation, the Fogarty International Centre and the National Research Foundation.
The sociology and Anthropology department is pleased to be hosting Zintombizethu Matebeni, a Professor who is the South Africa Research Chair in Sexualities, Genders and Queer Studies at the University of Fort Hare. The Sociology and Anthropology department is pleased to have hosted Zintombizethu Matebeni.
She has taught in the first term honours Sociology classes, while holding talks at the Nelson Mandela University. Zethu’s published research focuses on gender and sexuality, with specific attention on black lesbian lives, HIV/AIDS, LGBTQ rights and queer issues generally. She is the co-editor of “Beyond the Mountain: queer life in ‘Africa’s gay capital’” (UNISA Press, 2019), and Queer in Africa: LGBTQI identities, citizenship and activism (Routledge 2018).
She is actively involved in queer activism in South Africa and Zethu’s films, poetry and essays have been published in numerous journals, books and blogs including blacklooks.org and AWID.org. She has been a visiting Professor Yale University and has received a number of research fellowships including those from African Humanities Program, Ford Foundation, the Fogarty International Centre, and the National Research Foundation.

Prof. Margaret Cerullo has a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania, a B.Phil. in politics from Oxford, and an M.A. in sociology from Brandeis University.

Her areas of interest are social and political theory, including feminist theory and queer theory, sociology of culture, and social movements.

As the department chair, she has proven adept at strategic direction, fostering transformation, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality education and research. She has also played a vital role in curriculum transformation and the implementation of open and distance learning strategies, contributing to increased access to education for marginalized groups, including women and girls.

Topic: “Seeing Multiple Gender Roles in Conflict and (In)Security”?
Prof. Laura Sjoberg is British Academy Global Professor of Politics and International Relations at Royal Holloway University of London and Director of the Gender Institute. She specializes in gender, international relations, and international security, with work on war theory and women’s political violence. Her work has been published in more than four dozen journals of politics, international relations, gender studies, geography, and law. She is author or editor of fifteen books, including, most recently, with Jessica Peet, Gender and Civilian Victimization (Routledge, 2019) and with J. Samuel Barkin, International Relations’ Last Synthesis (Oxford, 2019). Prof. Laura was honored with the Distinguished Service Award in the Feminist Theory and Gender Studies Section of the International Studies Association in 2009.

Dr. Jo Boaler is the Nomellini Olivier Professor of Education at Stanford University. Former roles have included being the Marie Curie Professor of Mathematics Education in England, and a maths teacher in London comprehensive schools. Her PhD won the national award for educational research in the UK. She is an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (Great Britain), and a former president of the International Organization for Women and Mathematics Education (IOWME). She is the recipient of a National Science Foundation ‘Early Career Award’, the NCSM Kay Gilliland Equity Award (2014) and the CMC Walter Denham Mathematics Leadership award (2015). She is the author of eighteeen books and numerous research articles. She is a White House presenter on women and girls. She co-founded www.youcubed.org to give teachers, parents and students the resources and ideas they need to inspire and excite students about mathematics. Her work has been published in the New York Times, TIME magazine, The Telegraph, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal and many other news outlets. Her latest book is: Math-ish:Finding Creativity, Diversity and Meaning in Mathematics. published by Harper Collins. She was one of the writing team for the 2023 California Mathematics Framework, is co-leading a K-12 Data Science Initiative and was named as one of the 8 educators “changing the face of education” by the BBC.

Topic: Amplifying the Future: Leveraging Digital Activism and Mobilization to Advance Gender Equality and Challenge Gender-Based Violence

Dr. Rosaline Govender holds a Doctorate in Education from UKZN and has been immersed in the field of academic development since 2011 at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). Her extensive expertise in academic development extends across student, staff, and curriculum enhancement. At the institutional level, she has contributed as a member of various task teams, including General Education, Siyaphumelela, and the Philosophy of Education. As the Chairperson of the Gender Forum she advocates for gender equity through transformative thinking and action. She also represents the Gender Forum at the Institutional Forum at DUT which advises Council. Within the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa (HELTASA), she plays key roles as a member of the Coordinating Council and the Professional Learning Project team leader. Additionally, she co-convenes the International Learning and Teaching Collaboration between the DUT and Dr. SNS Rajalakshmi College of Arts and Science (India). Her research endeavours encompass diverse areas such as student success, staff development, teaching pedagogies, academic development, and gender studies. She is the co-editor of the book , Critical Reflections on Professional Learning during Covid-19: Context , Practice and Change and has written several book chapters and journal articles.
